When The Cold December Wind Blows

I used to blog about month endings and beginnings. Lately though, it seems that the passing days just merge into one whole season of  joy, laughter and tears. I clearly have forgotten comparing a month past and another month about to begin.

We traverse life sometimes with those unending questions. Why am I feeling this way? Why am I not happy? Why am I stucked and trapped in a situation with no clear move to go forward?  The journey is quite long coupled with vicissitudes  in life  that we don’t expect. It is during those times that we are tested, how strong we are to face realities. Sometimes we smile but it doesn’t reach our eyes.

A few more hours to go and we will be changing another leaf in the calendar. December, a month of merriment, a month of waiting for Christ’s birth. At times we forget while we celebrate Christmas, amidst the frenzy of parties, gift-giving and such but one important thing is celebrating it with our family. No matter how simple the celebration is, the presence of family members make it more meaningful. Let’s be grateful and thankful for God’s unending blessings.

Let Baby Jesus be the center of our celebration.

I am a little nostalgic seeing an earlier photo of Nate, the eight day after he was born. I remember those earlier days when we had to bring him back to the hospital because of sepsis. His pediatrician was so good we were able to bring him back home after more than a week. Nissa had to extract her milk and we had to bring it at the hospital every day when he was confined there.

Took this shot when we brought him home. They were supposed to stay with us but then Nate needs frequent visits to the pediatrician so they opted to stay in Manila.

How time flies! Eight days ago, Nate celebrated his 13th birthday. He is now a very active teenager. He is a red-belter in Taekwondo  now training during weekends when they are home in Gentri.

Look at that pose, the latest photo of Nate on his 13th birthday.

It’s the first Sunday of Advent. Some of us have been waiting for it, the four Sundays before Christmas. Over the year, I’ve blogged about the season and the short Christmas season thereafter.

So what does Advent means? And what do those four candles symbolize?

Advent was taken from the Latin word Adventus which means coming or arrival. I am excited like a child waiting with bated breath. Aside from Christmas, it’s  the season I love most. The first Sunday Of Advent is the new year in the liturgical calendar.

I wish to correct the page I found on Facebook with those inspiring short stories that I’ve been reading lately. There are so many group/pages of the same title but I find them distasteful. It should spell Bubble bunny with the second word in small letters. They are all short stories. True or not, lessons are learned in the end.

Whew!

Finally done with my check-up with my hematologist at The Medical City Hospital.  She stopped my medication but Aspilet, my blood thinner I still have to take every day. Next February, I will go back to her. My appointment with my nephrologist is scheduled by January so I have the whole season of Advent and Christmas free from doctor visits and laboratory tests.

Yay, I have a healthy and appropriate weight of 124 lbs. for my height and age. I occasionally eat rice now but once a day I eat Shirataki rice. Apples, wheat bread, sweet potato,  chicken breast and greens are my staple now. It is sometimes hard to control eating what is not healthy for diabetics but I am learning. I miss cakes and ice cream…haha!

Have a blessed and happy weekend. Looking forward to Monday when December starts.🌲🌷🍂🏕🎄

I was looking at Goodreads Choice Awards (readers favorite books of 2025) final round nominees for 2025 and I was surprised that among the 91 books I have read this year, there is not even one in all categories that is included. I used to wait for the final count and try to find the best book (readers’ choice) especially that of historical fiction. Perusing Goodreads, I saw some popular authors whose works I read before like David Baldacci, Freida McFadden, Laura Hillenbrand, Fiona Davis, Lisa Jewell, Emelie Henry, Elsie Silver and Dan Brown. I don’t like Dan Brown, there was only one book that I read of him but it turned me off. Never looked at his other books since then.

For the past years, I have voted around two or three books on different categories.  I really don’t read books based on how popular they are, I’ve always decided for myself whether a book is a good one based on the synopsis even if  it is only a three-star read. Some books might be unpopular to some readers but once you read them, you’ll find that they are worth your time. I am not much into romances, I’d rather read memoirs, book of poems, historical novels and thrillers. Back in college, I read Psychology books and English literature, a bit of Philosophy and Ethics. Being assigned at the Humanities Section of the UST Main Library had its advantage.  There are books that I always come back to when I get bored, Devotions by Mary Oliver, Markings by Dag Hammarskjold and Simple Abundance (Daybook of Comfort and Joy) by Sarah Ban Breathnach.

I am presently reading All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker. How about you, what books are you engaged in now?

I had a long chat with Nissa a few minutes ago. I laughed when she told me that they were principal sponsors to a couple, their neighbors in Cavite. I told her they are too young to be ninong and ninang. She said they were the youngest sponsors…haha. The reception was held in scenic Tagaytay.

Tomorrow is Red Wednesday. It is a special day observed by the Catholic Church to remember and pray for Christians around the world  who face persecution because of their faith. It usually takes  place on a Wednesday after the Feast of Christ the King. I asked Nissa if Nate would be wearing red tomorrow, I think it is required of them.
