I have been a follower of Kate Quinn and her books during the past years but this is the first time that I did not finish one. I loved The Diamond Eye, The Rose Code, The Alice Network but there is something about The Briar Club that doesn’t jibe with my taste.  I don’t know why, the characters are quite so different compared to the previous books I read of Quinn. Why hold on when there are still so many on my TBR list?

Presently reading  my 19th book, another title by A.J. Cronin called The Stars Look Down. The story revolves around a mining family in the early 1900. There are so many stories written about mining life in the past  but Cronin excels  in artfully presenting the characters no matter how hard life was. He wrote it back in 1935 and there was a film adaptation made in1940. I am thinking of looking it up on YouTube after I am done with the book, there might be one.

Gosh, another health problem showed its face. Aray ko!

I had an appointment with our family dentist this morning to consult her about my aching tooth. She looked at it and said I need antibiotics and Mefenamic acid for pain.

I told her about my health history, those times that we haven’t seen each other. She asked what blood thinner I am taking. I told her my hematologist prescribed Aspilet. She cannot pull my tooth off unless I have to stop the blood thinner for a week because she is concerned about blood clot. She suggested I call my hematologist first and ask permission. I already texted the latter’s  secretary. Couldn’t call her up because we might not understand each other  since I am wearing hearing aids.

After buying my medications, I dropped by the wet market for a while. The supposedly lowly galunggong which is considered a poor man’s fish meal costs sky high at 350-380 a kilo. One is not even sure if it came from China. Those Chiness pouchers harvest them in our shores and sell them back to  us. How sad!

Had a few minutes talking to my suki (fave veggie seller) before I went home. There goes my 2k flying over the window in just a small shopping bag.

I am thinking of those fellow Filipinos who don’t have steady income or those who have but earning the minimum salary a day. If you have two kids to feed, with house rent, electricity and water bills, few necessities from the grocery store, it won’t be enough.

When I was studying Economics when I was in college, we learned  the law of supply and demand, the dictates of the market is just something we have to swallow. The uneven distribution of wealth is something else. Poor Juan and Juana couldn’t keep up. We are not a poor country but we are rich with do-gooders and corrupt government officials whose concerns are filling their pockets instead of doing good service to the Filipino people.

I am glad that the youth of today are now alive, they participated in the latest show of disgust when we celebrated the EDSA People Power two days ago.
