Thoughts On  Giving

Happy Sunday🥰🌹🌿❤️

I attended two early morning Sunday masses today. I still attend masses online since I could  not  understand the face to face masses even with my hearing aids on. Garbled and distorted.

Today’s gospel invites us to consider the manner on how we give. Can we consider giving or giving up something which is precious to us? Do we give in the middle of our poverty?

I listened well to the homilies of two priest friends this morning. Fr. Aly is a Diocesan priest in our town while Fr. Pao belongs to the Society of St. Paul. Fr. Pao recalled those days when Metro Manila got flooded in 2009 because of typhoon Ondoy. I could not forget that since flood waters inside the house reached my neck. We have to transfer to our good neighbor and stayed there for two days. Then we had to renovate. Going back to Fr. Pao’s homily, he said that when they asked the parishioners to share and help the victims of the flood, some people donated gowns and formal suits. Oh my, the things they no longer need. Were the flood victims going to a party? How sad that sometimes people give things that they no longer need  not thinking if  the flood victims  could use them. Fr. Aly mentioned that aside from groceries and cash donations, some donors gave clothes that are no longer usable. I think even if it is just a small amount or a few groceries,  if they are heartily given, that gives credence to the idea of giving instead of sharing unwanted items that one no longer needs.

Here are some lovely quotes I want to share with you.

“Money is not the only commodity that is fun to give, we can give time, we can give expertise, we can give our love, or simply give a smile. What does that costs? The point is, none of us can ever run out of something worthwhile to give.” – Steve Goodier

You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” – Kahlil Gibran

Gibran is one of my favorite authors, I love his book The Prophet which is full of wisdom. He is a Lebanese-American writer, poet and visual artist. Devoured his other books when I was assigned at the Asian Section of the UST Main Library years ago.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” – Leo Buscalgia

Leo Buscalgia is an American author and motivational speaker.
