October 31 which was last Friday was declared a special non-working holiday here in preparation for our yearly Undas.
Today is All Saints’ Day, we remember those Saints declared by the Catholic Church who lived exemplary lives when they were here on earth. Tomorrow is All Souls’ Day.
Since time immemorial, it’s family tradition for us to offer masses for our dead relatives, pray the rosary especially for the dead and prepare something that we can offer for them. Back in the province when Mom was still alive, she would prepare food for snacks and invite our relatives and neighbors to pray the rosary with us afterwhich we would partake of pancit, galletas and hot coffee and sometimes sticky rice made into what we call inlubi usually cooked in coconut cream. We bury these food in the garden after our observation of Undas.
Now that I seldom go home to the province during Undas, I cook something that I offer before praying the rosary. At night on both days, I light candles infront of our main door. We believe these would light the path of our dead relatives to reach heaven. It’s tradition.
