Just want to update you on another book I’ve found by Nadia Hashimi. I discovered her a few years ago and read all her previously published books. I think this is her latest book called Spilled Ink. Another story about Afghanistan. Excited to start it.

What was your favorite subject in school?
I’d like to think, this is a bit irrelevant now for me since I left the university forty six years ago but I still remember my teachers in high school and my professors in college. When I was in high school, I really hated Algebra and Trigonometry but I loved Chemistry and Physics. What I enjoyed most though are my English and Literature subjects. We had very good teachers then. I remember admiring the works of Edgar Allan Poe especially The Cask of Amontillado. I looked forward to our spelling sessions and how foreign words were pronounced. History came next, we had Asian and Philippine history.
When I was in college, we were given three electives – Management, Economics and Accounting. I chose Economics. I was inspired by 6 units of it before taking exams on my third year on what specific subject to specialize in. I enjoyed Statistics, Labor and International Economics. Loved the write-ups on my thesis too but research was hard so I had to quit my job as student librarian on my third year. All in all though, that gave me a job at the oldest bank in the country, the Bank of the Philippine Islands. Proud to say that Nissa followed my footsteps, she and Obet are Senior Managers at the bank.
