International name is Fung-Wong. This is the 21st weather disturbance in the country. And here I thought we are already under the Amihan Season, with cold winds but no storm.
We are under signal #1 now. Our weather bureau DOST- PAGASA is not negating the fact that it would reach typhoon signal #5 when it makes a landfall in the north. The rainband is massive from Cagayan in the North to Samar in the Visayas.
We don’t have rain yet but tomorrow, PAGASA predicted a 50-100mm of rain and the worse is on Monday with a 100-200mm. Twelve years ago on this same date, typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as super typhoon Yolanda devastated Eastern Samar. It was an extremely powerful and catastrophic cyclone ever recorded.
I think of what happened in Cebu a few days ago. It was inundated, many lives and properties were lost. To think that they haven’t truly coped yet with the destruction brought by an earthquake barely two months ago. During the time of Duterte, he allowed dolomite mining in Cebu, grounded dolomite and transferred the sand in Manila Bay to make it appear like it has white sand. That cost the government billions of pesos and millions just to maintain it. It destroyed the lush rainforest which was supposed to protect Cebu from strong typhoons and flooding.
Here in Luzon, the mountain range of Sierra Madre is being destroyed by mining/quarrying and building structures. It’s a long range of 540km mountain from Cagayan in the north to Quezon in the south. It is a natural barrier against strong storms/typhoons protecting Luzon. I wonder what these crazy and greedy people are thinking. And the Dept. Of Environment and Natural Resources and the govt. allow it. Next to DPWH, this DENR is also corrupt. We have no more virgin forest to speak of. Instead of protecting the environment, it is destroying it. Shame!😡😠😡
