Just Wondering

I wonder, are they telling us the true numbers affected by this 2019-nCoV? How many actually died in Wuhan? I recently saw several videos  and they look so scary. Everyday, there is a reported rise in the number of those affected (worldwide)  and the number of deaths grow too.

Yeay, seems like my reading has taken a back seat.  Though I still enjoy it, I am now more focused on the latest news and sometimes watch senseless (at least to me) hearings  of the the Dept. of Health. This is another good for nothing secretary out there who used to say in the first few days of when news broke out about the coronavirus that it was not yet time to concern ourselves about it.  This time it seems that they can’t explain to the public how they would deal with this virus. Come to think of it, we don’t even have testing kits. Pathetic!  And duterte surfaced yesterday after a five-day absence, surfaces as a medical expert and seer saying it will die a natural death. Then we learned about the fatality and he said “there is a shortage of face masks because there is a virus outbreak. if there is no virus outbreak,  there would be no shortage of face masks”. Few kind words from a “supposed” head of the nation (sarcasm there). They keep defending their good friend china to the detriment of our own countrymen. They are still playing politics.

I reread another children’s book last night for the nth time in between my regular reads. The magic is still there after all these years. Charlotte’s Web and The Velveteen Rabbit  belong to my favorite books. A few weeks ago. I got hold of Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, it is a very short story written with illustrations about a little boy and an apple tree. I love it too.

I am presently reading A Hundred Little Flames. The author, Preeti Shenoy is Indian, her work has been translated to many languages. There are several Indian bloggers here that I follow and one of them always features the beauty of Kerala which is one of the places described in the book. It is nice to  learn another culture through books and blogs.  A lovely way to know something beyond the border…..beautiful.

Alarming

This  is quite alarming.

First novel coronavirus death outside China is from the Philippines.  He was the partner of the first confirmed case of coronavirus here. They were both admitted at San Lazaro Hospital.

What now Department of Health? What now Sec. Duque? Are you happy now that you still allowed those Chinese planes  to land here despite banning them from other nations?

The World Health Organization in the Philippines said this is not a locally-acquired case. So they brought it with them from China.

And we always say, PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.

I went out for a while this morning to have a hair trim and to send money to my brother in the province. Wow, almost everyone I met were wearing face masks. Some had washable cloth masks on, most were wearing surgical masks and a few with N95 masks.  I wore one too of course. Are we being paranoid here? I hope not. It just came to a point that everyone is aware that our government won’t take care of us. They can’t even provide face masks for free.  Where other nations have banned flights from China earlier in the week, ours was always “too late the hero”.

Earlier reports said that they are observing more than thirty one patients (that was as of yesterday) for possible infection caused by the coronavirus.

As usual their troll army is at work again. A writer friend had this shoutout on his wall: Name a country that in the face of a very dangerous health crisis deployed trolls instead of doctors.  There was also this site called Meme Buster which has screenshots of the same messages from different people making up stories that are not true. There was even one supposedly an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker)  lauding and  praising China for having a nice work and high salary. I repeat,  Filipinos here in our country are not racist but they make us feel like we are inhumane and have no concern for our neighbors. It’s just that unlike those countries also affected by the coronavirus, we can’t rely on our government to take care of us.  Some commenters said that if China is that rich, then why do illegal Chinese come to the Philippines to establish those offshore gaming which is illegal in their own country? And there are those who are avid followers of the president branding Filipinos to be Anti-China or Anti-Chinese for simply being concerned with national health security in our country.  So much for this, perhaps you are all getting tired reading my rants.

I had a nice chat with a friend whom I haven’t seen for quite sometime. We touched on so many subjects and I told her she could come over for overnight stay during summer when there are no classes. She is a teacher in our province. What a lovely feeling getting in touch with old friends.
