It was one those lazy, lazy days. Yes I know, it’s just the start of March. Last January, I dreamed of  blogging every day but that’s not to be. There are days when  I can’t think of nothing to blog about. Ideas are hard to come by and a good content is not even in the offing.

I spent almost the whole day reading aside from an hour of loading the wash and ironing late in the afternoon.   For the last three days, I found two books that I rated five   stars and four stars  consecutively. One was entitled Summer At the Comfort Food Cafe by Debbie Johnson, my first book of the author.  It’s been sometime since I read a feel good story. Lovely characters, all of them.  It speaks about friendship, family relationships and love. It’s comfort at its best, a fantastic read. The other night I started on The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.   I found the author some two or three years ago and I read a lot of her books.  The Great Alone is even lovelier than her famous The Nightingale.   This was set in the 1970’s. Alaska, a great and beautiful country  but has a harsh climate specially during winter. Winter lasts for six months and the sun shines for only six hours a day.  The wilderness, the beauty of it all. This is my 31st read this year.

I can’t help but write down some lovely quotes while reading it:

“Were you ever out in the Great Alone,
when the moon was awful clear,
And the icy mountains hemmed you in
with a silence you most could hear;
With only the howl of a timber wolf, and
you camped there in the cold,
A half-dead thing in a stark, dead world,
clean mad for the muck called gold;
While high overhead, green, yellow and
red, the North Lights swept in bars?”

“Winter tightened its grip on Alaska. The vastness of the landscape dwindled down to the confines of their cabin. The sun rose at quarter past ten in the morning and set only fifteen minutes after the end of the school day. Less than six hours of light a day. Snow fell endlessly, blanketed everything. It piled up in drifts and spun its lace across windowpane, leaving them nothing to see except themselves. In the few daylight hours, the sky stretched gray overhead; some days there was merely the memory of light rather than any real glow. Wind scoured the landscape, cried out as if in pain.

I think I’ve reached another milestone in blogging.   I didn’t expect reaching more than 3,000  followers  since it is really not my number one priority. There are only a handful who regularly make comments and like my posts.  I am more into the number of visits the blog has garnered through the years.  The silent followers and visitors, those who  probably just read  one or two posts then move on. I don’t mind, what is important is  how one tries to reach out and  having  those wonderful visits  and followers is a bonus. Presently, I have  a total of 517,780  in my stats.

Blogging?  It is still a continuous fascination and joy for me. When my hands could no longer press the keyboard, when I could no longer think of something to write about, I’ll stop blogging. For now though, it’s still a GO 🙂

Blogging.

I live it almost every day and it makes me smile when the content I post is noticed by bloggers from all walks of life. There are so many new bloggers out there, some have just started  and I am glad to meet them through this space.

I believe there are really no set blogging rules to follow. The success of one’s blog would actually depend  on how you express yourself in cyberspace. There are kindred spirits, they enjoy reading your posts probably because they can relate.

One thing I noticed though, there are bloggers who won’t even  like nor comment on your blog except to leave their blog links and invite you to visit theirs. I wonder if they even read your post. I consider those as spam mails and I don’t bother to visit their sites. I am always on a constant search for other blogs that I can follow. Normally, I follow those I like and when I am lucky enough, they follow back.  I have blogger friends who’ve been with me since WordPress introduced the “follow” and “like” buttons.   The “follow”  button was introduced by WordPress  back in September 2011. They enabled the new feature “like” in  August 2010. If you have been blogging  during those years, you would have surely noticed a slight increase in your page views. I discovered other bloggers through likes and comments.

For the past six  days, I got an average of 210 page views a day.  Best views were recorded last September 2015  and September 08, 2015 bested them all with 4,238 views in one day.   At the moment I have a total of 512,504  views with an estimate of  almost 300,000 visitors. Views and visitor   data are different. One could view a blog once or so many times.

I don’t have that  much number of followers. Including my 90 followers at Twitter which I linked to my blog, I only have a total of 2,917.  That is for Dreams and Escapes alone since I maintain five blogs. I believe though that it is not the number of followers that counts but the lives you touch through your blog.

A blessed Monday morning to all.

Cloudy skies. And there are two low pressure areas which are still outside the Phil. Area of Responsibility (PAR) but this early it looks like it will rain again. It’s a good thing we are finally done trimming  our plants and cutting the carabao grass yesterday. Gardening is  a lot of work but one is happy when you see the immaculate lawn smelling of the earth and newly cut grass.  We harvested calamansi too and got a bout a kilo. The two calamansi trees we have in the garden are presently bearing so many fruits. Heaven.

I was done with my Goodreads 2017 Reading challenge last August 20 finishing the 150 books I set myself to read. I’ve added about five more books since then. I am presently reading The House on Honeysuckle Lane by Mary McDonough, my first book of hers. Gosh, it’s full of Rumi quotes and one character was even named Rumi.  I remember those  earlier days  when I used to write on my little notebooks several quotations from that  writer.  His works are still widely  read until today. Reading is such a leisure that is so fulfilling. Give me a book anytime.

Last September 7 and 8, I got a total of more than 2,400 views alone on my post about Mama Mary.   I guess since 2013 thereabouts, my stats always jump during Mama Mary’s birthday. Busy Google.

So you think blogging is easy huh?

This is not to disillusion those who are new in the blogging community.  Some people might claim they are old hats when it comes to blogging. Some are successful enough having those followers in five digits.  Some are just there, observing, reading and sometimes commenting.

In all the years I’ve been blogging, I never attempted to write “how to’s” or make some suggestions on how to be a successful blogger. I guess when it comes to blogging, what is important is sharing something worth-reading, sharing a bit of yourself in the most sincere way you know.

I noticed over the years that there are some bloggers who don’t really take efforts about the content of their sites. They just visit several blogs and share links on their sites. Don’t you think that’s cheating? Oh I know, ping backs are great sometimes but not always. Years back, I encountered one or  two sites which stole my content, the whole thing and just changed some words in between. I got mad and called the attention of WordPress. It just stopped when I blogged about those two sites that they stole my content. I recently learned that you can actually block someone from reading and visiting your site or keep them away from posting comments just to call your attention.  One must be vigilant. I know  you would say, WordPress is public and unless you maintain your blog for your eyes alone, it would remain so.  It’s okay if you keep it as an online journal or a diary.  It’s your choice.

Starting a blog can be overwhelming or intimidating.  Nine years ago, a friend of mine at Multiply suggested that I start a blog at WordPress. I didn’t know how to build one much less customize but I posted  a lone entry in one of the free themes here.  Back then, I had a premium account at Multiply and had at least a hundred close friends who  were all active at the site.  It took me a year to come back here and learn to customize my site.  I’ve been blogging for eight years now and I am glad that I found this community of bloggers who share their thoughts in cyberspace. What a thrill to meet people around the globe. What a blessing to be able to read all those lovely posts they make and share.

There are always topics that we could all relate to. There are always subjects close to our hearts. As I have always said, blogging has become a way of life. It’s one perfect medium to meet online friends. It’s one perfect avenue to vent what one feels.

Ah, I should have done this a long time ago. I did of course but it was an entry post at the very start of this blog. I just transferred  it at the upper right corner under Pages entitled Dreams and Escapes.  Most bloggers have introductory pages on their blogs.

Back when I was starting how to set this up I was also learning how to customize it.  It was hard at first, a touch and go  process so to speak until I finally learned how to install those side widgets and update them. It was fun.  Now if I could have another easy theme to customize, maybe I’ll change my theme too but most lovely themes at WordPress nowadays  cost a lot. For now, I’ll stick to the Misty Look,  clean and clear lines which I prefer than colored backgrounds.  According to WordPress this is the first theme  that accommodated Custom Image Header. the header changes as you read several posts on the blog.  Since I don’t have those precise sizes of photos to upload, I guess I only had about ten or more photos as header images.

Once in a while, it is nice to navigate all these updates on one’s blog. It is nice to learn a bit more of what WordPress  has to offer. Do visit my page if you have time. It’s a work in progress just like this blog.

It’s one of those mornings that I get a little time to really sit in front of my PC, check and peruse my stats over the years. Maybe I am a little lucky to have all those viewers and followers to this site. The last time I looked, I got a total view of 476,640 max.  Those followers may not always comment and like my posts but I am glad that blogging has become something that I now value in my life. It is not easy to share your world in the  World Wide Web and be open to negative comments in the process. It is not easy to think of more than 2,017 posts  at the moment.

Here are the top eight posts that over the years have become the most visited ones. I don’t know if the categories and tags helped with the total.

Stats for all time

Homepage   182,850 views

Happy Birthday Mama Mary – 20,324

The Early Bird Catches the Worm But The Second Mouse Gets The Cheese –  7, 993

Dapitan Arcade (A  Shopper’s Delight) – 6,366

On Meeting Dr. Samuel  Ang Again – 4,947

Saint Padre Pio Chapel – 4,499

Feast Day of Senor Sto. Nino – 4,406

Another Year To Be Thankful  For – 4,205

My best view ever was last September  08, 2015  with a total view of 4,893 in one blog post alone and it was Mama Mary’s birthday.

From May 2010  to the present month, the stats are in terms of thousands.  I wonder where they are all coming from. It is just amazing sometimes to see your stats go up the bar.  I know some bloggers won’t consider it that important but when you are in the blogging world (unless your blog is set on private), it is always nice that people come and visit your blog.

How does one become an effective blogger? I started this blog with my journey as a cancer patient and survivor then later on, it morphed into the daily grind of living – reading books, gardening, day-to-day stories of my family and what not,  a smorgasbord  of things dear to the heart.

Time flies too soon and June is rapidly coming to a close. It’s been a lovely month spent reading a lot and gardening despite the heat. I hope the month of July would be kind to my weary bones and aching joints.

It’s Sunday again and allow me to say  for the nth time, “how time flies”.

Oh yes, it does.

Today is Holy Trinity Sunday. Josef and I attended an anticipated mass last night so we didn’t have to wake early to attend one today. Today I think is just for relaxing

I visited my garden blog and felt ashamed that I have neglected it for so long just like my other three blogs.  About time to have it updated. You are most welcome to visit it if you have time. I just posted my 101st blog there although it is almost as old as this one.  That’s the true picture.
