I am having an LSS since this morning. James Taylor….You’ve Got A Friend, Fire And Rain. Wow, I miss listening to his songs.

Back in high school, there was this guy (he was my oldest brother’s classmate) who sang the blues and strummed his guitar like JT. Everyone, my classmates and I got a crush on him. In every joint program in school, he had the intermission number. Boys and girls were separated during our high school days so we only saw each other during joint activities. Which reminds me, today is the start of our golden celebration/grand reunion since we left our high school alma mater back in 1973. It is a week-long celebration with some schoolmates/classmates coming back home from abroad to join the scheduled activities. Some classmates asked me if I am joining. How could I? I could not leave mom alone here. They are scheduled to go out of town and enjoy the events.

Today we also celebrate the Feast Day of St. Thomas Aquinas, an Italian Dominican friar and priest, a philosopher, theologian and doctor of the Church. He is the patron saint of the University of Santo Tomas where I spent high school and college days. It is around this time when most graduates of UST have their reunions. One schoolmate told me that the grand reunion for all Thomasians will be held on Sunday.

How lovely to reminisce high school days and all because of the lyrics of one song….you just call out my name and you know wherever I am, I’ll come running to see you again.

Don’t you miss that kind of friendship during your younger years and you were just beginning to discover what a beautiful world it was because you had kind and loyal friends? And aren’t you blessed and lucky that you are still friends after all these years? I do and I am. So glad there are now social media sites where we could meet.

What a wonderful thing friendship is🥰❤💐

Facebook calls them Memories, those somehow forgotten events that happened years ago but they remind you of it.

When I opened my Facebook account this morning and visited the app, I saw several photos of the last high school reunion I attended some nine years back.  Some of my classmates and batchmates visited me I think a couple of years ago but that was it. I am trying to avoid going out often because my immunity is low nowadays. Yes, I still wear face masks when I go out.

Taken almost 39 years after our high school graduation.

I do communicate with them almost every day thru Messenger, call them once in a while. They are the same old jolly people just like when we were in high school.  I guess high school days were the best years. Getting to know everyone, forming lasting friendship with some, embracing our individual journeys in life. Some of them post about their travels, some just like me talk and post pictures about our grandkids.  It’s quite nice to reminisce those days, the laughter, the difficult and challenging assignments we had to do in some of our high school subjects.

Back then, I hated Algebra but I loved Physics and English. History was a favorite because we were lucky enough to have good teachers.   Before we graduated, we had a high school presentation and the whole batch chose to imitate some programs on television but with some twists of course. It was more of the laughter in every episode of the presentation. Since I couldn’t act, I chose to join the production staff.  It was a lovely legacy to the junior batch. The succeeding batches had part 2  and part 3 of it. I remember the last issue of our high school paper, those lines  like “I bequeath……” describing something about yourself and bequeathing it to one of the junior students.

And high school ought to prepare us for another journey and difficulties. But we learn, how we learn in the process.

Ah, when you think of reunions, you think of the good old days, way when you were a bit younger, still hale and hearty so to speak.

Our family on my father’s side will have a reunion on February 11. All except one have all died already. Dad was second to the eldest among seven kids but then  my grandfather married again with  eight kids more. Their youngest is a year younger than I am. I’d like to think that among all the siblings, we are so few, four kids, my three brothers and I. My uncles though and my lone aunt had several. My cousins have their own families now and lots of  their children are already married too. Overall, maybe we could reach more than a hundred from the two marriages of my grandfather. Sadly it would be held in the province. Three of my aunts have come  home for a short vacation with one of my uncles. They were inviting us to attend. It would take at least 5 to 6 hours to reach our place.  I am in touch with most of my cousins through FB.  I don’t know most of my nephews and nieces through my cousins personally. It is nice though that even if we don’t get to see each other, we talk online.  Hopefully we’ll get to see some of them when they come for a visit.

The last time I attended  a grand reunion was in 2011 with my high school batch. It was  a lovely affair updating each other on our lives, sharing a meal together   and having nice chats. They even invited one of our teachers in high school.

Sometimes you just can’t  believe that you are really getting old. Those little kids you used to see have somehow grown up. They now have their own families and you have your own grandchild.  How time really flies. Yes I know, age is really just  a number besides your name.  Growing and getting older, that’s what but you also grow in wisdom as you age. What used to be hard to comprehend is now a daily occurrence in your life. What used to be understandable only to grown-ups are just bubbles that burst as you go along.

Growing old gracefully and getting older wisely,.
