Five years from now, we may look back and remember, 2020 was not such a good year.
It started with a fire in Australia and locally, we’ve seen the normally passive Taal volcano erupt, then this Covid-19 pandemic touched our shores followed by typhoons that brought havoc to some provinces especially in the Bicol region. Gosh, as if this is not enough, we still have this government whose priority is not the welfare of the Filipino people.
We endure and we have to. I haven’t been out of our subdivision since February 2020. The farthest I’ve gone to was at the gate of the village where we have a grocery store. The items sold there are not complete and I kept urging Josef for us to go to the supermarket before November ends so we could buy things we need for the Christmas season.
We are still under general community quarantine although those with age 16 and until 65 are already qualified to go out to buy necessities, medicines etc provided we wear face shields and face masks. I wonder how we could renew Mom’s social security benefits come January. She is the sole beneficiary of dad’s pension and beneficiaries are required to update their status every year so they could continue to receive their pensions. It’s quite impractical now for her to go out even with the car and a companion. I asked Social Security System (SSS) if we could apply for a home visit but they just gave a link where to write to and they never answered. SSS has changed the schedule of dates where they will credit benefits for our monthly pension and horror of horrors, there are many of us pensioners who didn’t receive our September pensions. SSS knows about this but they are requiring us to submit Statement of Account from the banks where our pensions are maintained. It’s their fault not ours, and they have data base of all those pensioners they didn’t credit. I am afraid this might turn into another hocus pocus of this government. They did that to Philhealth, 15B was lost thru corruption.
2020 is really a crazy year. I hope 2021 would be more kind to us all.
Yes it is a crazy year. My mother too gets pension as my father was working in the Indian Railways. Fortunately she did not have any problem. Things are bad here but life is going on. We have to be careful and take care.
Hope all problems are solved. Regards

Actually, it’s mine not my mom. Her pension was credited, we are just worried about its renewal come January, my dad’s birthmonth. Thank you Lorri!

I feel for you Arlene. But Filipinos are resilient people…so life goes on and kayang kaya lang yan, wag lang magkakasakit. Stay safe my friend and will continue to pray for the whole of mankind!

2020 has indeed been awful. But even if there is an answer to the virus in 2021, we sadly have to face the disastrous economic consequences of the worldwide expenditure on the pandemic. It may be a while yet until we can relax.
Best wishes, Pete.

I agree with you Pete. It may take years before the negative effect of the pandemic subsides.

The pandemic went out of the back seat when so many people including our family were affected by the flood.

Arlene, here in NJ, when something goes wrong now, we just shake our head and say under our breath, “2020.” It’s becoming a bit of a death knell. I first heard the first glimmers about a pandemic right after Christmas last year. I hope this year…there will be good, good, good news for 2021.

We can only hope that 2021 will be a kinder and less stressful year. Here in the US the pandemic is really out of control and hopefully things will improve once we get the new administration in place. I haven’t been very far from home either. I rarely go to the grocery store, but do visit a park near my house several times a week. It helps to not feel as isolated. Good luck with your social security endeavor. Government agencies can be so frustrating. Stay healthy and happy, Arlene!

I am frustrated with how this government is being run. So lacking! I agree, it may take sometime before this pandemic clears its face worldwide. I read somewhere that it was done in a laboratory, what’s your take on that?

I’ve read about the lab story too. There were some articles that seemed to link this conspiracy theory to a group of right wing activists. Personally I don’t believe the story as I’ve read some articles that seem to credibly disprove it. But I don’t have proof. Just crazy! I just wish that the Chinese government had been more outspoken from the start, our government had been honest about the dangers of the virus and if our fellow citizens behaved more responsibly. All one can really do is be smart and hunker down until there’s a solution. What do you think about this story?

I don’t know. I read two separate articles and there seem to be some truth in it. Have you ever wondered that even some of governments worldwide have poor leaders? They are not after the welfare of the people. I agree, we have to be careful always especially with our health, do all the necessary precautions in the process.

Many governments definitely don’t seem to care about people. And some of the leaders appear to just enrich themselves regardless of the laws and just doing what’s right and honest. I hope future generations get it right. As to the virus conspiracy theories I’d like to see proof if someone really has any. Regardless of how it came about, it’s nothing to mess around with.

I don’t know what these supposed leaders of the different nations want to show the world, less population?

I don’t know either! I imagine they just really don’t care about anyone who can’t or won’t enable their grifting ways. Sad!
