This will probably be the shortest post I will ever write on WordPress.
Until now, when I think about it, I tremble in fear.
I have just finished sweeping the backyard of fallen leaves early this morning when I saw this brown snake slithering on the grass going to our dirty kitchen. It exited the small vent going to the vacant lot behind the house. It was about five feet long, as fat as my arms. Its body was gray with brown blotches all throughout.
This prompted me to cut some of the plants planted at the back of the house. Gosh, that was so scary.
Do you know if it was a venomous snake, Arlene? It sounds huge!
We get two types of snake around here, but never in domestic gardens, just in the countryside. .
Best wishes, Pete.

I don’t know Pete. First time I’ve seen one in our 24 years of stay here.

Holly Molly ! * trembles * I can’t even look at photos of snakes. I have a clinical fear of snakes.

I am afraid of them Ren. I hope it won’t come back.

Seeing a snake in your yard is too close for comfort.

We have snakes in our garden. I love them because they eat all kinds of undesirable critters. But our snakes here are not dangerous or poisonous. I hope your snake is of the beneficial type!

I am not sure of that Sabine, first time I’ve seen one here. I hope it is not poisonous but I doubt if it comes back. The lot behind our house is vacant but I have concrete fence in between.

The vacant lot sounds like a better place for the snake!

It sure is better Sabine. But there are banana trees in that lot. Last Sunday, our neighbor had it cleared of the tall grass then this snake comes out of our place….hay!

Luckily, snakes will leave you alone if you leave them alone, too. Most bites happen because of stepping on them, putting your hand somewhere there is a snake and you can’t see it, or people being dumb and messing with them. Snakes are a great part of our ecosystem. They help by eating rodents. But some snakes also eat insects or fish. If you ever have a snake in your house and you’re not sure if it’s venomous, there should be people to contact that can safely remove them. It can be scary to see them if you’re not expecting them to be there.

I am afraid of them whether they are venomous or not because I don’t know if they are. My gosh, when I think about it now, I don’t want to venture in the garden so early. Thanks a lot for such useful advice.

You’re welcome. I used to have a massive fear of snakes, but after learning more about them and being around them, now I really adore them and even have one.

Thank you. I try really hard to face my fears and do something that challenges me every year.

I really do know how you feel! Two years ago I was in our garage and turned around to go back into the house, and a huge snake was trying to get in the door to the house. It was about 6 feet long and fat (like the one you saw). I was so glad I had closed the door before I went into the garage. Every time I go out in my garden I have to watch for snakes. We have both venomous and non-venomous snakes here.

It is really so scary. And when you are in that predicament, you just won’t know what to do. Good thing our doors going out to the garden are always closed so our pet Oreo won’t go out on his own.

Yes, that is a good thing. Be careful! Hopefully, you won’t see any more snakes.

I wonder if it got displaced by the earthquake and was looking for a new spot. Glad you didn’t step on it by mistake.

I was thinking of that too. So glad it slithered away.
