I wonder if nationwide newspaper still sells nowadays. With the proliferation of online news on social media and real-time reporting on radios and on television, I really feel so lazy reading a newspaper. I’d rather read online news without those many and sometimes full-page ads that distract reading.
The Philippine Star is given free to customers at Jollibee. You just have to ask for a copy. This morning I requested for one and scanned the headlines while eating breakfast. I usually only read the Lifestyle section and the Opinion pages.
There is a byline there that I have been following thru the years online. The author is a seventy something widow but she recently got married again. She writes once a week about life in general, her friends and her activities in particular and I love it when she writes about her family, his grandsons, and how she spend her days in between.
Years ago, we used to subscribe every weekend because that was the only time that we could sit down and read newspapers. That too is gone now. Watching news on television is more appealing.
I haven’t bought a national newspaper for over ten years. Since the advent of ‘rolling news’ on TV, they are always late in reporting anything. I sometimes still buy the local paper though, just to find out about things in this area.
Best wishes, Pete.

So it’s the same here Pete, if it is not free, I would not read it anymore. I’ll just read online.

I laughed that newspaper ads distract you. We still get a newspaper every day, and I like reading it because my eyes never stray to the ads. On screen is another matter. Ads jump around and won’t stay in their place. There is one other reason in favor of newspapers — I work the crossword and Jumble puzzles and save the Sudoku for a friend.

During Sundays, ads are more than the news I think. I never do crossword puzzles much less Sudoku which I find really hard to solve. Good thing you still have circulations there.

Are they becoming the thing of the past?

Over here, many people subscribe to read them on line. I stopped because the news got thinner and thinner

I choose the articles I read online Derrick. It is nice when you are updated with the news in real time.

Here both the New York Times and the Washington Post have had soaring circulation because of the political scene here. Both of them can be subscribed to in both paper and on line. We have the Times delivered because I love the crossword puzzles. We read the Post on line.

I’m glad newspapers are still thriving in your area Elizabeth. Here, reading them online is free.

I get the daily newspaper that is printed in the town about 30 miles from us. I grew up in that town and worked as a reporter for that newspaper many years ago. I also get our local newspaper which is published weekly. I enjoy reading all of the local news, but I get national and international news on television and online.

It is really nice to know you still patronize your local publications. I don’t know if we have anything local here except the national and international news. Like you, I read them online too. There was a time when there were weekly women’s mags, I am not sure not if they still exist.

I prefer print media over e-media as I like to read lying down which I can’t do with my desktop PC. I can’t stay longer than one hour per sitting to view the internet as I get a stiff neck and back.
