The sky is dotted with grey clouds. I can’t understand this kind of weather. It’s been raining on and off since the start of December. There are times when one o’clock in the afternoon looks like six in the evening. That’s how dark it goes sometimes.
It’s been raining since noon today, that kind that stays for a few hours and you won’t want to get out of the house. Nursing your coffee mug, trying to start another suspense thriller on your tab. One feels a little lazy and lethargic.
Three days ago, I found a copy of Paula Hawkins’s second book called Into The Water. Goodreads Choice Award 2017 winner under the mystery and thriller category. Back in 2015, her first book The Girl On the Train also won in the same group. I can’t help but compare her second book to the first one. I actually gave them both three-stars but I like the first one better. I got confused at first while reading the first few chapters of Into The Water. So many characters, it’s a compelling read though – mysterious, eerie and full of suspense. I didn’t expect the ending. I just started on the Missing Child by Patricia MacDonald. It’s my first book of this particular author, another suspense and mystery thriller. The first few chapters are fast-paced, that kind that you would want to pick up again after setting it aside for an hour or two. It is my 199th read on Goodreads this year. I finished my 150-book challenge 2017 the last week of October and continued on. So many books, so many stories to read, so many talented authors to discover. I guess this is the year that I found so many authors but they were not in my bucket list. Mary Oliver’s poems come in handy when I am feeling low. I always find her works so uplifting. I wish I could find some of her books here. I think National Book Store does not carry this author. I do read some of her works online though.
Books are the easiest companions you can ever have, they don’t complain, they don’t get mad, they just wait in a corner until you have the time to hold them again.
What have you been reading lately?
Excellent review, Arlene. We had almost two years of rain in the early part of this decade. I’ll soon be reviewing what I’m reading

It’s about 4:45am and 24 degrees. We moved to the Midwest from southern California in 2005. I love it here and I like snow as well.

It must be nice to spend one’s lazy time in a corner when it is cold like that. The weather is cold here only at night.

Oops I hit send to soon. I am listening to Louise Penny’s Bury Your Dead. It’s a cozy mystery, set in a small village in Quebec, 6th in the Inspector Armand Gamache series. I like it because Penny always “branches out” so that I learn new things too.

So you love mysteries too? First time I heard of Louise Penny. I would try to look for her books one of these days.

Arlene, every year since the 8th grade, usually @ Christmas time, I read Tolkien’s Lord of The Rings trilogy. Currently I’m halfway through The Return of the King (the 3rd book.) Although I’ve read these books countless times, I always enjoy Tolkien’s brilliant storytelling & characters. I’m also reading a new Christmas short story collection by sciFi author, Connie Willis (her Doomsday Book is an alltime fav, even if you don’t like science fiction, it’s a great read!) Blessings & good booking! 📚✨🤗✨🌟✨🤗✨📚

Thanks for the update Virginia. My son used to have that trilogy but I think we lost the books when our house got flooded back in 2009. We actually lost so many wonderful books that I used to collect since I was in college. I don’t read science fiction much. I guess I will try it one of these days. Thanks a lot.

I love rainy days for reading, but I prefer snow, and now that we have some, I’m reading a lot, between walking pups and feeding them and the cats, and then walking pups again!
I’m rereading some Inspector Wexford mysteries by Ruth Rendell, and some Vera mysteries by Ann Cleeves. I love the Gamache series by Penny, too; they’re good to read in order, and other’s a new one every August, like a new Donna Leon every March( (Comissario Brunetti).
I’m also reading n anthology of Advent meditations that I’m really enjoying.
Happy reading; glad the rain abated!

Reading is such fun isn’t it especially when you discover new authors to your liking. I usually read at night and after lunch before a cat nap. Sometimes I read so early in the morning too when it is quite impractical to go back to sleep and too early to prepare breakfast.. What’s the title of that Advent meditations? Thanks Kitty!

I quit reading the second Hawkins book for the same reason. I got fed up with the many points of view. I am continuing on with rereading classical American books. “Red Badge of Courage” at the moment.

There’s a storm coning here in Southern Luzon I think. and the Northeast winds bring in the cold especially at night. Enjoy the snow (when it is not too heavy 🙂 )

Creating some time and following some of the guidance that coincides with your personality just might improve the quality of life you experience. In reality, how much time is needed to read 500-750 words especially if it results in a potentially healthier outcome?
I am so appreciative and humbled to have you following my blog site. I hope it adds quality and value to your life. 🙂
