Yesterday, Mom got busy fixing her things, arranging and rearranging her clothes, her medicines, some groceries that she has to bring home and as usual reading those medicine prescriptions (she does it almost every day) that she has accumulated while arranging them with the newest one on top.
She came to my room with a copy of a passport size print and said “keep this in your wallet so you won’t forget my face when I die”.
I wonder where that came from, I mean her statement on dying. So in jest I answered, “Mas mauna pa ako sa inyo” meaning I’ll die earlier than she will. We both laughed. True, while she visits her doctor regularly complaining about the normal wear and tear of growing old, she looks hale and hearty at 87. I’ve visited the hospital and been confined for a number of illnesses more than I can count. I had a phobia of going back there, just the smell of antiseptics reminds me of those days when I was struggling with my health.
She is going home tomorrow and she said that there are lots of things to do there. I will surely miss her and her appreciation of anything that I put on the table. She said, “parating special ang ulam natin”. Those are ordinary fare I serve every day but in her eyes, they taste even better.
Life with mom, there is never a dull moment when she is around.
It does sound like she will go on for a long time yet, Arlene. Perhaps she feels happier settling her affairs, and speaking to you about the fact she will die. It’s probably a ‘just in case.’
Best wishes, Pete.

Haha, it’s crazy but I am open to that kind of topic. She is excited to go home because it rains now and then and she told me she will plant vegetables in a small patch in our big garden there. What I am worried about is she is alone most of the time although some of the families living in our place are relatives. She plays “pusoy”, card game (I don’t know how to translate that in English) with her friends there.
Thanks Pete!

Oooooh..how dear! I wish my mom and I had the same sort of relationship. I gather, your mom doesn’t live with you? I hope some day my boys would say that my company is enjoyable. Right now, them being in their mid 20’s and staying still with me and their dad can be trying. They’re great kids, but when as parents we have an idea of how to do things “better” it’s hard not to voice out, which doesn’t bode well for them haha!

Thanks for the visit my friend. She prefers staying in the province, she tells me she could not exercise (that means taking a walk) and could not clean and sweep the garden with fallen leaves, could not plant her favorite veggies here and she’s afraid of flood.
There will come a time when we reach that age when we could really appreciate their presence in our daily lives, kahit makulit pa yan, marami pa ring kwento sa buhay buhay. Looking forward to more posts on your blog 🙂
