“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side
near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”
“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that
happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play
with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”
“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.
“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”
“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by
bit?”
“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a
long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or
have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you
are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you
get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all,
because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand”.
This is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing. =>

I am sure you are also familiar with it. When I feel less inclined to face the world, I read children’s books and they make me smile. There are always lessons learned even in simple stories like this one.

A lovely story Arlene. I can still remember many stories from the books of my youth. It is only as you get older that you can really appreciate the quality of the writing.
Best wishes from England, Pete.

That’s right, books can open children’s eyes to lovely adventures, lessons in life and positive impressions that they would remember through the years.I also love E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web and Burnett’s The Secret Garden.

The Velveteen Rabbit was my favorite book to read to my daughter. It came with a stuffed Velveteen Rabbit which I still have along with the book…just in case I have grandchildren. π

Hi Arlene,
I never had that book when I was a child (we couldn’t afford it) but when I had kids I finally had a reason to get it and read it, with them! We enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing this. Have a blessed weekend!
Regards,
Mary

Good morning Mary! Do you know, I was also able to read most of the lovely and inspiring children’s books when my kids were growing up and reading is a shared pleasure with them until now.
