I was supposed to have my check-up late last month but I was a little busy at home so I postponed it till today. It’s kind of weird sometime to feel afraid to see the results of the laboratory tests. I guess, it is really something inevitable and no matter what the outcome, you have to accept it. We passed by New World Diagnostic Center to get the lab results then proceeded to the Chinese General Hospital for an appointment with my surgical oncologist, Dr. Samuel Ang. He was a little late arriving at the clinic and the secretary explained that he had to handle an emergency surgery.
Dr. Samuel Ang is a very caring and wonderful doctor. I finally brought a camera and told him I am still doing some blogs about him. He just smiled and told me to give him the link to my blog. He shared that some of his patients were able to find him through the internet. I just said, it is my small way of saying “thank you” for taking care of me.
I am scheduled for another check-up come January 2011 – colonoscopy, CEA marker testing, liver ultrasound and the usual lab tests that I need to undergo every three months. My SGPT/SGOT results were still a bit high but compared to my last laboratory tests, they have gone down significantly and Dr. Ang explained that sometimes, these are still the effects of chemotherapy. It’s almost a year now since my last chemo and I am really glad that finally, I am getting every bit stronger day by day, being able to do the things I used to do.
Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center
I have this interesting conversation with some of the patients waiting at Dr. Ang’s clinic. They were asking if he has been my doctor for long and I told them he operated on me July of last year. It was followed by six cycles of chemotherapy at the Benavidez Cancer Institute in UST. One of them said, “you are looking good, parang hindi ka nagkasakit.” I’ve often asked myself, “how should you look when you’ve been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer and underwent rigorous chemotherapy sessions?” Everytime I meet people who didn’t know what I have gone through, they are simply amazed that I look okay. I thank God most of all for letting me go on with life, still enjoying it with my family until now.
Dr. Ang said, ” Congratulations Arlene” with that big smile on his face and that matters a lot because I know that I will get through this, that I would be hundred percent fit again! I’d like to bear this in mind, “he who has health has hope and he who has hope has everything”.
God is so good, all the time!
hello tita!i still have to search what does SGPT/SGOT stands for and what does it mean.hehehe. I’m happy too that you surpassed what you’ve been through. I do understand that it was a tough time for you and your family, but God just love you so much that He still want you touch more lives with your life story per se as an example of strength, hope, and faith in Him.God bless you more tita!

Dear Arlene,
You’re right, Dr. Ang is the best and most kind doctor I have met. I wrote on your blog last august and was also dx to have rectal cancer. I had my OR last nov 11 at St. Lukes. He really went the extra mile to take care of me and did his best for me. Right now I’m having my chemotx and you’re right it’s not a walk in the park. In fact, I’m more apprehensive about my chemo than my operation. I still have 6 more cycles to finish with my xelox chemo. From stage 3 my rectal ca has been downgraded to stage 2 with all nodes negative. He was able to remove all the cancerous tissues and he is really a gifted doctor. I love him so much for his expertise, humility and being a caring doctor with a heart. We will survive this cancer Arlene and live long and meaningful lives.take care and God Bless you!

hello Doc Dina,
I am glad to hear that you are done with your surgery. Let’s pray that after your chemo everything would be well. I told you ,Dr. Ang is the best doctor in the world. I am due back for colonoscopy next month but I still have to scout for a new urologist. I am also due for CEA marker testing and blood tests.
When we last talked, he was wondering why there were so many patients who found him online, so I told him I’ve been blogging about him since my surgery almost two years ago. He smiled and said “thank you”. If he can read your comments here, he’d be smiling! I gave him the link to my blog and just asked him to take a look if he has time.
I wish you well Doc, God bless you too. Let’s pray for each other.

Hi Arlene!
First of all, I’d like to say Kudos on your getting through the chemotherapy! I only know too well what it is like to be going for each cycle. Not that I’ve experienced it myself but my dad, who’s 65 years old was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon CA like you sometime in 2009. He had surgery and finished chemotherapy. Like you, we all anxiously await each CT scan, CEA and colonoscopy that he has to go for for surveillance.
I am currently in DC doing my fellowship training in Hematology and Oncology. Yes, I am a doctor and at first found it ironic that my dad was diagnosed with cancer as I got accepted into a training program for Cancer and blood disorders.
I am religious and close to God but I don’t think my dad is but at that time he was diagnosed, I really would like to think that he found God…in so many ways.
Recently, he had a colonoscopy and it showed a sessile polyp in the cecum. This was biopsied but the results are not yet back. It does make all of us nervous. I have already started asking friends, colleagues about a good surgical oncologist. When dad had his first surgery for colon Ca, he had to have it in cebu and there were no surgical oncologists available there. The surgeon who did his surgery was however very good and is US trained. Samuel Ang’s name came about when my friends told me about him. I googled him just in case the biopsy results turn out unfavorable and I came across your page.
I take comfort in the fact that other patients out there are doing so good after chemo and it gives all of us hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I am praying for a favorable biopsy result. How I wish, you could talk to my dad at some point and give him encouragement. I think people with cancer should all unite and support each other. It makes the journey of fighting cancer more easy. Well, I hope you are in good health and as I’ll be praying for my dad each night, I’ll include you and each and everyone who has been diagnosed with Cancer.
God bless.

Thanks for sharing your Dad’s story. Your father and I are both traveling the same road to recovery. I am so grateful meeting so many people here who are on the same journey with me. It gives me that feeling of oneness with them, trite as it may sound.
Dr. Samuel Ang is the best surgical oncologist I ever encountered, not that I’ve seen many but he is simply the best. He is a very caring doctor.
My last CEA marker testing is within the normal range, lower than what I expected. I told Dr. Ang when I had my check-up last month that colonoscopy is so expensive. He referred me to one of his colleagues who said that I could have the colonoscopy done anytime when I want, he quoted a price much, much lower than what other doctors charge for the procedure. I really hope I could meet your father. Just let him know that cancer is not the end of everything, there is even a bigger C than that, CHRIST.
Thank you for dropping by Doc. God bless po.

It really depends on the type of colon cancer…there are unfavorable types like mucinous adenocarcinoma as this does not respond well to the common chemotherapeutic agents. sometimes its not how long we are going to live but whether we are comfortable with our remaining days. age per se is not a contraindication to chemotherapy but i would not blame you if your family decides not to undergo chemotherapy. chemo is not at all benign…there are numerous side effects and sometimes patients suffers too much for a very little benefit. it would be best to really to seek the opinion of other oncologists and be honest with your concerns.

Hello Ms. Arlene I passed by your blog as i was searching the name of Dr. Sam Ang. My father was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis yr 2010, brought about by Hepa that self healed during his teenage years. His cirrhosis was detected when he vomit blood and flushed out black stool, complication was esophageal varices..He was in and out of the hospital for rubber ligation on his ruptured varices everytime he will flushed out black stool. Check-up has been regular since then last hospitalization was August 2010..He was okay until last week when he had a fever and flushed out black stool again. He was confined and ligated ( the varices ) once again however a big shocked was the result of the ultra sound when a solid mass on his liver was found out.. It was communicated to us when we were about to go and ready to go home when the doctor called me..All of the news about the ultra sound i was trying to absorb everything via phone while maintaining to act as if everything is normal in front of my father who is already 69 yrs of age..He did a CT scan and currently we are waiting for the result..I was crying inside and inside my room because his doctor is trying to communicate that possibly it is the C that is showing on the ultrasound..I have so many questions knowing that regular check-up has been made , asking God why..it progressed into this..CT scan result is not yet out, while i restore my faith to God that He is in charge..Reading your blog gave me hope and strength to stay in the presence of God’s grace.. I may not have the answer on why this thing happened but what is certain God will never leave me/us.. Were still hoping for the miracle to happen on the CT scan result..Let His will be done..His great and perfect will..
Thank you again and continue being an inspiration of God’s faithfullness..

Hi arlene. Saw my post dated May 2012. A lot has happened in the past two years. Right after that message i posted here in your blog i was diagnosed with stage 2 ductal carcinoma and Her2 positive as well. I opted for mastectomy of the right breast of course under Dr. Ang. That was July 2012. I started my chemo Sept 2012 the completion of which was Dec 2013. I was given 8 cycles of hard chemo and 18 cycles of herceptin.
Now i am done with all the treatments and back to teaching full time. I visited Dr Ang for a check up last June. I am blessed to have Dr Ang, Au and Lei. They have helped me overcome my fears at the onset of the diagnosis. Dr Ang’s healing hands helped me throughout this journey. Its not yet over, this journey towards complete recovery but i say and i claim that the Lord has healed me completely. It was not an easy path that i traversed for the last two years. But i was able to push through with the Lord’s blessings and with the help of Dr Ang and my oncologist i was able to recover. Emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and financially my limits were tested. But here i am now, trying to tell others that there is always a way if you believe. With people like you Arlene the big C will no longer threaten us all due to our prayers and inspirational stories. Thanks again dear sis and God bless us all!

You’re welcome Cris! I haven’t been to Dr. Ang’s clinic for the past two years ata. I am avoiding hospitals and doctors (awa ng Diyos maayos naman health ko). I like how you say it, “may mission pa tayo”, I think so too. You can add me up at FB, it’s arlene1027@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Hi Cris, I eat chicken without the fat and skin, a bit of pork but less on preservatives but I seldom eat meat because they are hard to digest. Fish and veggies yes, I eat lots of those. Okra, malunggay, saluyot are the best, they have plenty of anti-oxidants. I used to drink green barley too. Now I am taking garlic oil gel for my blood pressure. if you can tolerate fresh garlic, it would also be best.
Thanks sa pangungumusta, I hope you are doing well. God bless you too.
